Diet & Nutrition
Feeding a greyhound a high-quality diet is essential to maintaining their lean muscle mass and overall health. Because they are deep-chested dogs, they are prone to bloat (gastric torsion). To prevent this, it's recommended to feed them two or three smaller meals throughout the day rather than one large meal. Elevating their food and water bowls can also make eating more comfortable for their long legs and necks.
Exercise Needs
While they are built for speed, greyhounds are sprinters, not endurance runners. Their exercise requirements are surprisingly moderate. A standard routine should include:
- A 20-30 minute walk, once or twice a day.
- Opportunities to sprint in a fully fenced, secure area a few times a week.
- Always keeping them on a leash in unenclosed spaces due to their high prey drive and speed.
Grooming Routines
Grooming a greyhound is quite simple. They have very short, smooth coats that do not produce the typical "doggy odor" and shed minimally. A weekly brush with a rubber grooming mitt is usually enough to remove loose hair. Because they have very little body fat and thin skin, they are sensitive to extreme temperatures. You will likely need a warm coat for them during winter walks.
Common Health Tips
Greyhounds are generally healthy dogs, but their unique physiology requires a veterinarian who is familiar with the breed. Their blood profiles (such as thyroid levels and red blood cell counts) differ significantly from other breeds. Dental care is heavily required, as they are very prone to tartar buildup and periodontal disease. Daily teeth brushing is highly recommended.
